Editing in the filmmaking jargon is probably one of the most unique and specialized competencies. In its best form, a well crafted Editing manifests in the most effective way a film can ever present itself. This may be the reason why the art of editing is sometimes called an "Invisible art". In its 100 years of film- making legacy, Indian cinema has witnessed editing process getting metamorphosed beyond imagination.

Of the greatest artists belonging to this Industry, is a rare gem- Suresh Urs, who has had his distinct and distinguished trademark as an impeccable editor with unfathomable skill springing from the classical  TV series (Hindi) of Malgudi Days of 1986 till Billa-II (Tamil) of 2012, with more than 700 films (and still counting)to his credit as an editor!

Suresh Urs is a very familiar signature under the "editor" tag, predominantly in the South Indian cinema. With his natural repellant nature to the "glamour of publicity", Suresh Urs prefers to let his actions make noise, more than his words. This is evident from the long list of the most acclaimed movies like Thalapathi (starring Rajnikanth and Mammooty), Roja (Aravind Swamy, Madhubala), Bombay (Aravind Swamy, Manisha Koirala), Iruvar (Mohan Lal, Prakash Raj) and Bollywood's Dil Se (Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta) all from the most influential filmmaker Mani Ratnam to which Suresh Urs rendered his services as  Editor. It's Bombay (1995), that fetched Suresh Urs a National Film Award for best Editing thereby triggering his career as a popular Editor. Followed by other popular movies like Gemini, Ramana, Vasool Raja MBBS and P.Vasu's Chandramukhi, Suresh Urs never had to turn back. In his successful and enchanting two decades of journey as an Editor, “Suresh Urs” has established himself to be a synonym to the word 'Editing".

Suresh Urs’ success in Editing is less known to the common man. His role in re-imagining and holistically crafting the movie the way we watch it on the screen involves more than just assembling shots into a coherent sequence. It is a well-knit and precisely organized application of film resources like sounds, images, dialogues, action, story, momentum and pace- all in right sequences, which is solely a product of imagination translated into reality which, in many cases, is an enigmatic art to understand for even the fellow-technicians. A share of a hero's success, a part of story's level of penetration into audience, a chunk of the unit's overall success or otherwise-all of it goes to an editor depending on whether the things are put in right place or not. Suresh Urs is one genius of class who makes things fall in right place and has thus inspired directors and young editors through his "invisible art".

Indian film industry, in general and Tamil film Industry, in particular owes a lot to this simple 'gentleman artist' for whatever has already been achieved and for what’s on the cards!

Suresh Urs is presently busy with movies like Naalu Per Naalu Vidhama Pesuvaanga (Tamil), Nunnunarvu (Tamil) and an upcoming Telugu feature film "Karam Dosa" being directed by Trivikram G. With this master at work, let’s hope South Indian cinema has many accolades waiting at the National Film Award functions in years to come!
